Joey Barton claims 50% of professional footballers bet on matches

The 35-year-old ex-England midfielder is currently serving a 13-month ban for admitting placing bets on 1,260 matches.

Joey Barton claims “50%” of professional footballers bet on matches, and says gambling is “culturally engrained” in the sport.

Barton was banned by the FA in April 2017 for breaching betting rules.

Joey Barton said “I think if they found out everyone who has been betting and cracked down on it, you’d have half the league out,”.

In response, former FA exec Adrian Bevinton told Today; Barton’s claims ‘seem an anecdotally high number’ – and’there’s a moral debate to be had’ about the amount of sponsorship by betting companies.
